The Age of the ‘Country Teacher’: Japanese Literature, Education and Media in the Second Half of the Meiji Period
Presenter: Pieter Van Lommel (Tokyo Keizai University)
(Suzuki Takane, Waseda University)
The second half of the Meiji period (1868–1912) was a pivotal time in Japan’s transformation, marked by the creation of a modern education system. As elementary schools spread across the country, a rapidly growing group of teachers emerged—not only as a new professional class but also as an engaged and enthusiastic literary readership. This book turns our attention to these provincial teachers and asks the following questions. What did their daily lives look like in rural Meiji Japan? What kinds of magazines and stories were written for, by, and about them? How did educational journalism and literature influence their professional and private lives? And what broader social functions did modern literature serve during this dynamic period? By adopting an interdisciplinary approach and uncovering a wide range of previously overlooked sources—particularly teacher-oriented magazines and the short fiction they featured—this study sheds light on the vibrant, complex roles that literature and media played in modern Japanese society. It offers a fresh and nuanced view of how literature, education, and media were deeply intertwined in the making of modern Japan.
