Modern Japan History Workshop

The Modern Japan History Workshop was founded in 1998 in order to provide Tokyo-based researchers of modern Japan with an opportunity to discuss their work in an informal setting.

As both MJHA and the MJHW exist to promote the study of modern Japan and Japanese history, the two organizations have decided to enter into a collaborative affiliation. However, the MJHW continues to function as it always has, with all decisions being made by an independent workshop organizer, who is not necessarily an MJHA member.

For more information, or if you are interested in presenting, please contact Workshop organizer Joelle Nazzicone at joelle.nazzicone@gmail.com.

Guidelines for Presenters

Those interested in presenting at the MJHW are advised of the following points:

  • All disciplines are welcome.
  • In principle, talks should be on modern topics (Bakumatsu/Meiji to the present), focused on Japan or Japanese people. Comparative approaches are also welcomed.
  • Strong preference is given to regular attendees of the workshop.
  • Strong preference is given first to current PhD candidates and Master's students developing their dissertation topics, followed thereafter by senior scholars.
  • In principle, presenters will deliver a talk that has not been given at another forum in the Tokyo area.

The Modern Japan History Association is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supported by member contributions.
